You'll see this picture in the Jan./Feb. issue of Hobby Farm magazine in the "Just Say Cheese" spread.

My girls are bred for early kidding to avoid parasite troubles. I haven't seen a problem in my own herd, but I have heard some woeful tales from others, so it's better to be safe than sorry I say.

Kidding season should start the end of January in my barn and end in the middle of February. I plan on keeping at least 3 doe kids this year and maybe a buckling. More milk and more cheese! I just got a great new cheese making book to keep me busy this winter~ it's gorgeous!

I really made some good some raw goat milk cheddars that gotten eaten up by my husband pretty darn quickly. I had to promise I would make plenty more. I'm also pretty excited about the world of bloomy rind cheeses- I can't wait to try some out.

Miss Luci is my herd queen and also the 1st one due. She is bred to Handsome Rob and I will be delighted to see what those kids look like.

We had 17 goat kids born on Double D Ranch this year kidding season. I have sold everyone except one buckling, and have even sold 2 does. It seems the mini Nubians are just so darn popular. I had lovely kids and the girls are giving lots of creamy milk. I am making soap, feta, chevre, and cheddar cheese almost every day- oh yes, and gallons of raw milk kefir...and of course there's the beautiful mason jars of rich milk in the fridge just to drink. Love it!

As soon as I have some free time I'll post pictures of the girls and some of the kids they had. I'll include the bucks, and announce the new 5th generation mini Nubian buck coming to live here soon.

1st Generation Mini Nubian Triplets

Gina kidded her first time yesterday and she did well! Triplet kids from Handsome Rob. That makes these little charmers 1st Generation with LONG ears! Hooray! Can you tell I am really happy about that?

The 1st picture is the little girl. She mews like a kitten and is nigerian sized. The other kids is the red and white, bald faced boy. Super cute. He has one funky ear, that turns out a bit. He should make a very nice pet.

Then there is the little darlin' down below. He is gorgeous and would make a nice herd sire in a mini program. Maybe mine, if I don't get a buckling from Penelope, who is 1st gen. with long ears and bred to a 3rd gen. moon spotted boy.

My very best girl Luci gave birth to triplets on my anniversary! How sweet is that? Last year she gave me two lovely doe kids on my birthday.

Because my back and shoulders are getting worse, I have decided to downsize to miniatures. These are easier to handle, although not easier to milk. Feet trimming, shots, and worming- general handling will just be easier on me with the smaller breeds.

So, sadly, I have decided to start with the bucks, of which I own four! Not really neccessary, especially since I will just use the Nigerians for breeding purposes from here on out.

Snow Day!

I took the camera out to the barn this morning because we got a good snow fall lastnight. The camera was used by my 10 year old son to make a Lego still shot movie, so the color is all off. It used to take orange-y pictures and now they are blue...sigh.

Lola with the pretty blue yes is thefirst one to brave the snow. My little 1st generation Nubian/Nigerian cross doelings have never seen the snow before. Lola, the braver of the two tentatively steps out and finds a good place to potty.

Lucy, only two and newly aquired, sees snow for the first time and is not at all happy. She despises change and was so upset she wouldn't eat her morning grain or stand nicely to be milked. She was brought from the west side of the mountains to this high desert and adjusted well until this!

Ethel, not yet 10 months, with Mr. Darcy, only 3 1/2 months and the little girls, Lola and Gina, one month old. Everybody is curious, but actually stepping in the stuff?? No way.

The little girls get brave and go for it. You notice Lola is already gone and Gina is not far behind, but still, she is behind!

They walk around in the shallow stuff just under the barn roof and against the wall and doors.

Never phased by weather, Lambchop sees me and figures there must be treats nearby...it's worth the walk through snow.

She checks my "treat pocket". My carhart coat usually has treats in the right pocket. Sorry girl! I forgot this morning. Bad maaawwwmmy.

Ethel and Mr. Darcy watch the antics of the braver croud, but they aren't budging.

Lola and Gina decide that was enough fun for one day and get cold. Back to the stall!

I love Lola's blue eyes and the crazy ears on those girls. I know the future generations will have to get that bred out of them, but the 1st generation mini Nubians and just so darn cute! These girls are my first try, and 50%/50%. I adore the flashy colors and the personalities can't be beat. I love to be entertained by naughty goats and these two are naughty as well as affectionate. They are soft, cuddly and I look forward to adding them to the milking line.

This is from a local breeder I just recently met when I purchased a doeling from him and visited his farm:

ALL DAIRY GOAT BREEDERS IN OR NEAR CENTRAL WA -

I am attempting to revive Central Washington Dairy Goat Association (CWDGA). CWDGA folded several years ago due to lack of membership/particip ation. After talking with several breeding here in Central WA, I have concluded that there is significant desire and need for a local association to promote dairy goats and host activities and shows. This will be an all breeds (ADGA recognized) dairy goat club.

I have made contact with the former president of CWDGA and will be receiving the information that he has. I hope to have an initial meeting after the first of the year (probably late Jan/early Feb). Please respond with contact information. Name, address, phone, breed(s) and any other info you deem important.

We will set meeting place and activity locations depending upon member location. I live in Prosser, about halfway between Yakima and Tri-cities.

I will be looking for a lot of help with this project. We will need to elect a board and start gathering ideas for activities and shows.

I am very excited to start this club up again and hopefully we will have overwhelming support and activity.

Another New Member of the Family

These are not great photos, but I wanted to post them anyway, and introduce our newest girl in the herd. She is going to be called "Ethel"; she looks just like Lucy, but without the white on her side.

Her registered name is DKGH ROCKEY'S HOP TO IT

She comes from Greenehaven Nubians in Prosser, Wa.

At just 9 months old, she is a large doe. The Greenhaven herd consists of quite large does! She may not work out very well for my plans of mini Nubians, but she will still be an excellent addition, providing me with lots of good, rich milk, and full-sized Nubians when bred to either of my Nubian bucks.

She's a little scared, it being her first 24 hours here,and in a terrible wind storm! The barn has a tin roof and so the wind makes alot of noise in there.

I am thrilled. Gina is the brown and white, very Nigie -looking girl with brown eyes, and Lola is black and white with...BLUE eyes!

Barbosa was a good boy today. He got attacked my a scary monster that made alot of noise and "ate" the hair off of his throat...then he had some nasty "poison" syringed down his gullet. Not to even mention the needle that sucked his blood...makes you wonder what goes thru their poor minds sometimes.

Today the bucks got their blood drawn for CAE & CL testing, and they got wormed. Getting ready for breeding season and winter! Much thanks to April and her Dad and boyfriend- couldn't have done it without ya! But I bet you could have done it without me!

Lucy with Daddy. Daddy had shoulder surgery so he actually gets to be home for the entire fall season and some of winter. He and Lucy really bonded.

I got a new milker today. Two year old Lucy. She's a sweetie. OUr herd is all young does right now, since we sold almost everybody last year, so Lucy didn't have to get beat up to get "initiated" in...good for her!

She'll be bred to Handsome Rob. Pearl to Barbosa, and maybe Glory to Barbosa as well. Peach will be bred to Blackberry my Nigerian Dwarf buck. (he's a blue-eyed, handsome dude)

It was worth the wait! Twins. Another blue roan and white boy, this one nicer that the one born last year to the blue roan doe. Libby has better bloodlines and a nicer udder. These aren't the best pictures, but were literally taken within minutes of the birth, so...you get what you can take right then.

Libby is my favorite doe, and I am delighted that she has given me a little girl that looks so much like her.

I'm retaining the doeling, of course *U* The buckling is the blue roan and white with frosted ears. He's big, spunky, and got them long ears from Handsome Rob. Nice little boy! I'll sell him as a buck if he's payed for before he's 8 weeks old. He's the only Nubian buckling I will have for sale this year.

I was talking to a lady on the phone the other day concerning herbs, and she told me the most interesting story. She had ordered a large amount of red raspberry. I thought she must be a midwife that delivered several babies a week. “No,” she told me, “I raise goats.” I was really surprised.
She adds 2 tablespoons of red raspberry to the feed of her female goats each morning for 2 weeks before the doe was bred. She said, “This aids in fertility.” She also feeds pregnant goats 2 tablespoons per day for the last 6 weeks of pregnancy.
This seemed a strange and expensive way to feed goats until she told me the amazing results she had achieved. She said they have many goats and have not had to call the vet in over 4 years. After commencing the red raspberry, it has become normal for her goats to have 3 and even 4 kids at one birthing, with no complications. She said her goats yield record breaking volumes of milk that is creamy and delicious.
Their little farm is known far and wide for the wonderful success they have had with goats. She believes the red raspberry is a very significant factor."

Debbie Osborne told me of a natural parasitic that she uses with both her goats and horses.
Ingredients
1 cup dry Mustard seed - powder
2 cups Thyme leaf - cut
2 cups Wormwood herb - cut*
1 cup Black Walnut hull - powder*
2 cups Sage leaf - chopped
1 cup Garlic - minced*
2 cups Rosemary leaf - chopped
1/2 cup Cloves - chopped
1 cup Psyllium seed - powder
2 cups Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.)*
She says, “As a rule of thumb, I use 1 cup of the powdered herbs to 2 cups of the cut herbs, except for the cloves and the D.E.” The most crucial ingredients in the recipe are marked by an asterisk (*).
Directions
Sprinkle the mixture on their feed in the morning and evening for 7 days straight. A mature goat gets about 1 tablespoon in the morning and evening. A mature pony gets about 1/4 cup in the morning and evening. A mature horse gets about 3/4 cup in the morning and evening. Use slightly smaller amounts for offspring.
This recipe can be used with other animals. Just use your judgment on adjusting the amounts of the daily dosages according to the animal's body weight."

New Member of the Family

This Thursday there will be a new member of the goat family here. I am going to look at and hopefully bring home a new buck- with exactly the color I wanted, and the udders and milk. I am thrilled, and can't wait to see what he does in my small herd that is being rebuilt from 5 goats, and now 6. I'll have to report on my trip at the end of the week, complete with photos.

This is Blackberry, a registered blue-eyed Nigerian Dwarf with his tormentor, Ethel the goose. On sunny, lazy days while he's lounging, he loves her. She grooms his little white "bangs" and ears...but eventually she takes her job a little too seriously and gets pretty rough. He tries to get away, she follows, eventually he runs and hides!

I have decide to get another buck instead of a doe. I really need one more anyway. Handsome Rob is great, but I have some of his daughters here and nobody for them to breed with.

I have found 3, all good genetics, all the same price, and all pretty local. I have decided on one, but since I don't like to wait once my mind is made up, I may just chosse one of the others. I would like to get him home and settled in before the weather totally turns winter on us.

I put pictures of my Handsome Rob up on the sidebar. He's such a sweet boy, and has great genetics for show and milk, and I particularly like the milk *U*

I am looking for raw cheese recipes, so if anybody knows where I can get that information, I would be really grateful. I'm not having good success. I make cheese, but I'd really like to make more raw cheeses for my family.

Boy I miss having all the milk I could want...maybe next fall I'll be swimming in milk again.

I only have three little girls right now, and it just isn'tright somehow...I know the other goats needed to be sold, and I needed to pare down this year, but I find myself already dreaming of breedings and babies. It's just one of my passions, these silly long-eared, floppy uddered girls. I adore my goats and their crazy personalities.

So...I am trying to decide on ONE local breeder to order my Christmas present from (am I the only one who gets goats for birthdays and Christmas?). I am thinking Debbie Patnode again, because I love her herd, but it's so much fun to shop around too!...SO, if you are a goat lady, leave me a comment with a link to a breeder not too far away so I can go look!

I don't have time for details- but the goats are clean, healthy and family milkers with good bloodlines. Nothing terrific. I am looking to sell my herd to good homes. I really am fond of these critters, but my back can't handle the work anymore and I need to be free to travel, as we have an illness in the family.

Here are the lovely twin girls born today. These girls are just about an hour old here, I'll post more in a couple days when they are romping around and bouncing *U*

Mimi is mahogany red with with white spashes and swirls and black trim. Her ears look so funny, and considering the great ears in her genetics I'm a little surprised by the "plane" effect, but they are nice and long, and should be fine.

This little girl is Honey, and she looks so much like her grand sire, Handsome Rob, my Sandbur buck. Isn't she pretty? She's white with red roan and black trim like her dam.

Here's Praise with Mimi in the isleway of the barn. Mimi is about 3 hours old here.
